"Fine Art Photography" -- The term still creates confusion for many people. Sometimes when I tell people that I am a fine art photographer, they assume that means that I photograph other artists' paintings. As recently as 50 years ago, combining the term "fine art" with the term "photography" was generally considered to be oxymoronic. It was often believed that creating an image with a machine (camera) simply could not qualify as "fine art." That bias has been changing in recent years, in part because of the regular use of photo editing techniques.
One definition of fine art is "a visual art considered to have been created primarily for aesthetic purposes and judged for its beauty and meaningfulness." In other words, it is art produced primarily for beauty rather than for utility. The word "fine" does not so much denote the quality of the artwork in question as it does the purity of the discipline.
Fine art photography refers to photographs that are created to fulfill the creative vision of the photographer that is, to express her/his artistic perceptions and emotions, and to share them with others. Fine art photography stands in contrast to photojournalism, commercial photography, and snapshots.
The images within this book reflect a broad cross-section of my photographic vision over the years. They had a profound impact on me when I was creating them and I hope they will evoke a profound response from you when you are viewing them.
The Magic of Digital Fine Art Photography David Ritchey 9780929915579 Books
Beside the beautiful photography that Mr. Ritchey presents, the studies provide rich opportunities to look and learn when framing a photograph. I truly appreciate his words in the introduction that you don't need a complex digital camera to take Fine Art Photographs - it is the artist behind the camera that creates the picture. This has always been my belief and Ritchey so clearly provides the proof of that wisdom. I can be found in the field with my point and shoot and more complex Sony. They both live happily together in my camera bag. The one I grab is the one that suits the setting. I do agree with his statement regarding having a micro lens, but he illustrates beautifully in his flower shots that micro lens are not absolutely necessary and the softness of his photos magnifies there is still the opportunity for dynamic close work!A delightful coffee table book, but so much more than that, a book filled with lessons for any student of fine art photography to study, learn from, apply and grow their art.
I would say "Thank You, on so many levels."

The Magic of Digital Fine Art Photography David Ritchey 9780929915579 Books Reviews
This book allows you to contemplate moments that usually pass in a second and to see the beauty in things you might never notice. Definitely a book for those who are seeking visual inspiration and contemplation.
In his introduction, David Ritchey describes his vision of art as being able to translate "what I see from an internal vision into a tangible, externalized form that can be shared with others." From the secret revelations of incredibly close-up views of nature to colorful, creative manipulation of content and form, Mr. Ritchey takes the viewer on a playful journey through the lands of what is and what could be.
Two thumbs up for David Ritchey's "The Magic of Digital Art Photography"! We especially enjoy this book because we reside in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and it is so magical to turn the pages and recognize quite a few spots local to this area! Ritchey has exceptional skill in transforming ordinary photos into breath taking works of art. Keep up the good work and we look forward to your next masterpiece!
What a stunning book. David Ritchey's "The Magic of Digital Fine Art Photography" is both engagingly beautiful and intelligent in its compositions. He brings the viewer into a world that touches the emotions on all levels. He even throws in a bit of humor in some of his pieces and often his titles which offer an instant shift in perception which is wonderful.
I am glad that is featuring this beautiful book. Instead of a coffee break, have a Ritchey inspirational photo break!
I'll start by saying clearly that yes, this book is the work of my father, but that doesn't mean I can't write a valid review! I learned to see with a photographic eye (though my art is music and photography is only a minor hobby for me) at my father's side and have always admired his ability to capture compositional abstractions. My favorite work has always been his details and close-ups, taking the subject to a new level by focusing on its subtle structure and intimate aspects. Many of these photos in this book have a majestic and peaceful air - a stillness and quiet that invites you to 'experience' the message, the mood of the photo. From misty shots of natural beauty to studies in doorways and storefronts, the breadth of David Ritchey's is wonderfully displayed in this book.
Abstract images of architecture and machinery are clearly David Ritchey's forte; Bits and pieces, taken out of context, assume a life of their own, captivating and intriguing, drawing the mind into a world of Lillipution detail.
In his more fanciful and anachronistic images, Ritchey relocates the pyramids of Egypt and the castles of England into contemporary Bucks County landscapes. Dramatic lightning storms rage, and rogue waterspouts dance in ordinarily tranqil Cape Cod skies. As if carried on the wings of a herron into another time and place, the imagination is free to journey through this magical new world created through the painterly eye of digital fine art photographer David Ritchey,
