Maisie Dobbs Bundle #1, Pardonable Lies and Messenger of Truth
Books 3 and 4 in the New York Times Bestselling Series
"An outstanding historical series . . . deeply empathetic." (The New York Times Book Review)
Pardonable Lies, by Jacqueline Winspear
(Maisie Dobbs novel #3)
In the third novel of this unique and masterly crime series, a deathbed plea from his wife leads Sir Cecil Lawton, KC, to seek the aid of Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator. As Maisie soon learns, Agnes Lawton never accepted that her aviator son was killed in the Great War, a torment that led her not only to the edge of madness but also to the doors of those who practice the dark arts and commune with the spirit world. Set against a finely drawn portrait of life between the World Wars, Pardonable Lies is "a thrilling mystery that will enthrall fans of Jacqueline Winspear's heroine and likely win her new ones" (Detroit Free Press).
Messenger of Truth, by Jacqueline Winspear
(Maisie Dobbs novel #4)
On the night before the opening of his new and much-anticipated exhibition at a famed Mayfair gallery, Nicholas Bassington-Hope falls to his death. The police declare it an accident, but the dead man's twin sister, Georgina, isn't convinced. When the authorities refuse to conduct further investigations, Georgina takes matters into her own hands, seeking out a fellow graduate from Girton College Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator. In Messenger of Truth, a Sue Feder/Macavity Award for Best Historical Mystery Award nominee, Jacqueline Winspear delivers another vivid, thrilling, and utterly unique episode in the life of Maisie Dobbs.

So, I love the Maisie Dobbs series. I'm not usually a mystery novel fan, except for Rex Stout. I heard good things about this series and just finished books three and four, which I bought together in this bundle. If you know you'll read both, it is a better value to buy this rather than purchasing each individually. Also, it was convenient to have the next book ready to go when I finished book 3.As for the stories themselves... I really enjoy the premise of the Maisie Dobbs books. Post-WW1 England, class issues, personal relationships, friendships, and of course a mystery to solve. It's good stuff... however, the author can be very repetitive in her language and how she describes people or behavior. I mean, the exact same phrases over and over and over again. Some people may not mind but that sort of thing irks me so I have to force myself to ignore it and focus on the story. And it IS a good story. So I do recommend these books and the series altogether.
Book 3, Pardonable Lies, focuses on some mysteries from the war, as well as its after effects. Book 4, which I enjoyed least of the 4 I've read thus far, involves the mysterious death of an artist. I'm excited to see what book 5 holds and plan to purchase Maisie Dobbs Bundle #2, An Incomplete Revenge and Among the Mad: Books 5 and 6 for summer vacation reading.
As an aside, because they are so similar, if you enjoy Maisie Dobbs, you may also enjoy Catriona Mcpherson's Dandy Gilver mysteries. It is also a contemporary author writing about a period female detective, and I believe they are both of a similar era. While I enjoy both and would read all the books in both series, I prefer Dandy Gilver as a character just a bit more. After the Armistice Ball (Dandy Gilver Murder Mystery 1) and Dandy Gilver and An Unsuitable Day for a Murder (Dandy Gilver Murder Mystery 6) are very fun reads and I think the author is a bit more daring in her storyline.

Maisie Dobbs Bundle #1 Pardonable Lies and Messenger of Truth Books 3 and 4 Maisie Dobbs Novels edition by Jacqueline Winspear Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Having read 8 of the Maisie Dobbs novels in close succession, I found these books are when Winspear really hit her stride. There was enough character development in the first 2 novels to sustain more plot and less character exposition in these 2. The first novel plumbs the depths of Maisie's struggles with post-traumatic issues in the wake of her war experiences as she works on a case. The second has her pursuing the truth behind an apparent suicide of a rising star in the art world. In each novel, the cases are filled with the subtext of characters' WWI-related history, and the historical details are at times integral to the plot in some cases, and at others just enrichment of the era between the wars in England.
We see more of Maurice in the first book, and considerably less of him in the second, but his absence is replaced by growing roles for Richard Stratton, Priscilla Partridge, and Andrew Dene. Billy Beale continues his presence as the steady, worldly assistant to Miss Dobbs. If you are like me, you will rush on from these to Book 5!
Book 3 was a little too new age for me... but overall a good plot and depth for the case... Book 4... was very interesting, I really enjoyed the depth of the different intertwined plots... kept it very interesting... less mystical "crap" for a lack of words... Maisie's character-- is frustrating---to seem so insecure, after accomplishing so much... she should be as self assured---especially with her education, experience and training....hopefully she will "find" herself soon.... this insecurity in her is frustrating to keep reading. Still enjoyed the books... but if the next one has her questioning her abilities and continually repeating them ... I'm going to have to just leave her on the proverbial shelf...
I have had a love hate relationship with the Maisie Dobbs books over the years. I read the first one and just wasn’t overly impressed but I pressed on and read the second and again felt like I wasn’t connecting with the series in the way that I had hoped.
But I keep pushing myself to read them because not only do I love the covers but I love the time period! I love books set either during the Great War or in the years immediately following in England.
This should be a series that I fell in love with based on the setting but I struggled to really connect with Maisie as a character so I just haven’t loved this series in the way that I hoped. But I am all for foraging through….not indefinitely mind you but I decided that if I read the third book and still didn’t enjoy it then I was going to give up.
I recently binge watched the Miss Fisher Mysteries on Netflix and I was feeling like I wanted to read a mystery with a female detective, maybe a little romance, and set after the Great War…..so rather than read an actual Miss Fisher novel, I settled on the third Maisie Dobbs book….mostly because I was so in love with the Miss Fisher TV series that I didn’t want to change anything by reading one of the books so…..here we are!
I was so pleased that this book sucked me in right away!
I don’t know if it was the ‘missing person’ case or the fact that Maisie herself became more ‘real’ to me in this book but I liked this one much better than the others. In the early books I felt like I never connected with Maisie…..she always seemed like she was avoiding what happened to her in the War and kept herself busy with her job so that she didn’t have to directly deal with her feelings. But in this book she is forced to slow down and start looking back on the past and getting to a place of acceptance which I admired.
The other thing that I liked was that there were almost two mysteries happening….Sir Cecil’s son and the brother of Maisie’s friend. Both cases were connected in a round about way and I loved seeing how they came together. This book put the War into a new perspective for me and I really enjoyed watching that unfold on the pages. I also liked seeing the change in relationship between Maisie’s mentor, Maurice, and Maisie herself. I think that has great potential for future books!
I think this series still has some bumps to work out but I am at least willing to continue with the series and I look forward to seeing how Maisie moves forward with Maurice and how her ‘coming to terms’ with the War will change her character in future books. The one thing I felt like I wanted more of though was romance. I realize Maisie is struggling to define her role as a new woman in the ‘modern age’ and trying to sort out how she feels about Andrew Dene but I basically want more romance….please! I think that is the one thing majorly lacking in this series and it’s something I would LOVE to see more of!
