Lucas Blake was a slave, born to a black mother but completely white in color. He had a determination and stubborness that constantly kept him in trouble. With the help of a teacher who befriended him, he learned to read and write with refinement without his master's knowledge.
His resentment for the white race festered in him and his determination became stronger to become his own man. As a young boy he had watched with envy as his master's sons climbed the big oaks in their yard, a privilege he was denied. In Lucas' mind this became a symbol; to climb to the very top of the tallest tree and bring back a tender bud. He knew when he did this he would have reached his loftiest dreams and have accomplished his goals of dignity and worth.
He escaped to Wisconsin and joined the Union Army. He fought at Bull Run and proved himself as a soldier, was accepted into Washington society and fell in love with Samantha, a white general's daughter.
He was involved in a scheme with his general to expose a spy and voluntarily allowed his reputation to be defamed. He was confined for three months where he was beaten into a blank state of mind, and Samantha and all his friends turned against him.
Finally when the spy was apprehended, the plot was exposed and Lucas was brought out of confinement, he became a hero to all who knew him.
At a ceremony where was to be honored for his bravery, with head held high he proudly told the crowd who he was.
But would Samantha and her father accept him? He had come to terms with who he was and he knew where he wanted to go. And could Lucas Blake finally climb his tallest tree?
